Early Release Day

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 29, 2017, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:00am.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Character Recognition Assembly

On Friday, May 27 JLPS acknowledged the hard work and efforts of our students who demonstrated Courage this past month. We are fortunate to have many students who strive each day to face challenges directly, to seek help from others when necessary and to do the right thing even when it may be unpopular.
We also had the opportunity to recognize  two outstanding grade 8 students who have gone far and beyond to build our JLPS community. Their leadership in the areas of our School Works program, to spearhead various projects throughout the school, to support all students in every grade and their participation on the Johnny Lombardi Cares Team and our House Colour Teams caught the attention of MP Deb Schulte. Cecelia and Brandon were presented with a special award for all they have done this year to build inclusion and support our school. We are proud to have helped to nurture their efforts.

Track and Field Day

On Wednesday, May 24 all grade 4 to 8 students took part in our very first Track and Field Day at Tommy Douglas High School. Students had the opportunity to choose both track and field events. We had amazing participation and will have a very strong group of students moving on to represent Johnny Lombardi at the Area Event.  Congratulations to all our participants for their hard work and effort.
An event like this takes a tremendous amount of organization. Thank-you to all JLPS staff who helped organize this event for our students. A special thank-you to Mr. Pereria and Mrs. Denney-Falsetta for their "behind the scenes" organizational wizardry.

Message from our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you for all that you do to strengthen our schools and communities. This is a good time to celebrate your child’s achievements over the past year.

One of our goals in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture and caring and learning.” That includes a culture that emphasizes engagement and positive relationships among all the members of the school community – students, staff members, families and community members.

You, as parents/guardians, are our most important partners when it comes to education. The support you have provided to your child throughout this past school year will help to strengthen our schools and make a difference to your child’s learning.

I encourage you to continue engaging your child in learning throughout the summer, and to help them to see the connections between what they are learning in school and the world around them. There are so many opportunities to do this over the summer, whether that’s planning a budget with your child, enjoying the natural beauty in York Region, reading a book or visiting local sites. Whatever your plans are this summer, I wish you all a successful end to the school year, and a safe and enjoyable summer.

Additional Track and Field Information

May 23, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Wednesday, May 24, 2017 (rain date: Thurs. May 25th) students in grades 4 to 8 will be participating in track and field events at Tommy Douglas S.S.  Each student will be participating in 2 to 3 track events and 2 to 3 field events.  The events take up the entire school day.  Please review the following list with your child as it will promote what promises to be an enjoyable day outdoors!

v  Clothing
Students are expected to wear shorts, T-shirts and running shoes; track pants and sweat shirts are recommended should cooler weather conditions exist.

v  Full Participation
Students are to remain with their age group for the entire day.   Students who are unable to participate due to health concerns must bring a note signed by a parent indicating the reason.  They will be assisting teachers during the day.

v  Survival Accessories

To avoid sunburn and dehydration all students are asked to bring sun block and a chilled water bottle which the student will take home with them.  Healthy snacks such as carrot and celery sticks or fruit are also encouraged.

v  Lunch

Students are expected to bring their own packed lunch, snacks and drinks for this day as they will not be permitted to leave the school premises. All students must bring a lunch as they cannot go home.  Tommy Douglas S.S. will also be running a concession stand with water, Gatorade and freezies.

v  Clean-Up

Students will be expected to participate in a clean-up of the yard after lunch and towards the end of the day.

If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school.  We are looking forward to a great day!

Sincerely, Johnny Lombardi Staff
