Food Bank Record High!

Thank-you to all our families who helped contribute to our Food Bank Drive. Because of your generosity  we collected over 500 food items. Wow! Your kindness will help to support families in York Region who wouldn't have had enough this holiday.
A special thank-you goes to Ms. Romanelli's class who reached their personal goal of 100 items, just in their class. It just goes to show you, you are never too young to make a huge difference!

Winter Wonderland Concert

On behalf of all the students and staff of Johnny Lombardi we would like to thank all families for joining us at our very first Winter Concert. I am sure that you were proud and astounded by the high caliber of presentations last night. Once again your children demonstrated how amazing they are and especially the importance of the Arts in our Curriculum.  There were so many moments when your children shined brightly. I would like to personally thank all staff who were involved in preparing their classes for last night's performance. A great deal of hard work went into last night's success. I never tire of saying what amazing staff we have; last night once again proved me correct.  On behalf of the JLPS family we wish you all a wonderful break spent celebrating, relaxing and most importantly being with those you love.
See you back on January 9, 2017!

Traffic Concerns

We have had an increase in cars being parked on both sides of the street on Lawford Road and Stanton Ave. Please be reminded that parking is permitted on the school side of both streets.  We have also had an increase in parents double parking and students running between cars to reach their parent's vehicle. With the arrival of snow the visibility of students has diminished, making it more difficult to see students as they move between vehicles. Please use our car loop Kiss n' Ride  when dropping off or picking up your child in order to ensure that all students are safe. A short wait is better than an unfortunate accident.

Immunization Information from Public Health

If parents/guardians or students receive a letter from York Region Public Health requesting immunization information, here’s what to do:
Update York Region Public Health on your child’s immunization status in one of the following ways:

  • Online at https://eimmunization.york.ca
  • Fax documents to 905-895-6066 or 1-866-258-2026
  • Mail immunization information to Immunization Services, Box 147, Newmarket, ON L3Y 6Z1
  • Call York Region Public Health at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 73456

Each child should have received a flyer outlining the FundScrip fundraiser.  When you purchase one of the gift cards you will receive dollar for dollar's worth of the amount. In addition, the school will receive a percentage of the amount to be used to support school resources, particularly library books and technology. Please take a few moments to go over the long list of businesses which include: Loblaws, Petro-Canada, Starbucks, Home Depot and Walmart, to name a few.  All orders must be in by Friday, December 9th in order to guarantee a December 20th delivery date. If you need another flyer, please contact the school office at 905 585-0002. They make great gifts! Your support is appreciated!

Movie Night Reminder

School Council is proud to present our very first Family Movie Night on Friday, December 16 at 6:30pm. There is no cost for the movie and we will be selling popcorn, juice and water for $1.00 and pizza slices for $2.50. Monies raised will go to supporting the purchase of new resources for our outdoor play areas. Please join us for this fun opportunity to meet other families from the Johnny Lombardi community. If you haven't sent in your reply that you will be attending, could you please do so asap.

You are never too old....

Mr. Meagher and Mr. Pereira's grade 8 and 7 classes proved that you are never too old to build a snowman. On our very first really good snow day our adventurous grade 7 and 8s built these amazing snow people during their recess break. Named Johnny and Jenny they brought some fun and frolic to a cold, snow day.

This is a good opportunity to remind all parents/guardians that unless there is an extreme cold alert our students go out each day for their morning recess and lunch break. Please ensure that all children come to school dressed appropriately for outdoor play. Extra socks and pants are always a good idea for our younger students.

Thursday 1 December 2016

Food Bank

JLPS will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Vaughan Food Bank.  We will gladly accept all donations over the course of the next three weeks. Please send in your items with your child to add to our Holiday display in the front lobby.
Your support is appreciated!

Volleyball Challenge

Today our intermediate students challenged our teachers to a fun-filled volleyball competition. Many students had the opportunity to play and were surprised to find out that teachers really can play! We had lots of spectators cheering on both sides and although the teachers came out victorious this time, a rematch is already in the works. Another shining example of the great spirit we have here. Go Lightning Go!

Thank-you for your support!

Thank-you to all families who contributed to our charity drive for the Krasman Centre.  We received hundreds of donations that will go to making someone's life easier this holiday season. We will continue with these types of campaigns throughout the year, as together we work on building your child's character, sense of purpose  and helping them see how their actions can impact our community and the world. Thank-you to our Johnny Lombardi Cares Team and Ms. Romanelli for organizing this special initiative.

Trustee Greetings

Message From Our Trustee

As we near the end of 2016, I hope everyone has had a great school year so far and found opportunities to get involved with the life of the school.

It is wonderful to have opportunities to see not only what our students are learning, but to see how they are learning – collaborating and problem solving, using technology in exciting new ways, and engaged in hands-on activities.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff members, students, families and community members across our Board.  Thanks to all of the great people we have in our system, we continue to advance student achievement and well-being.

Our Board continues to have a strong commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive learning environments that enable all of our students to thrive. Engaging families in your child’s education and the school community is in an important part of creating that environment.

There are resources for families available on our Board website at www.yrdsb.ca/parents, including information on Board programs and supports, and tips for parents to support your child’s learning at home and at school.

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful start to 2017. I hope you are able to enjoy time with family and friends.

Linda Aversa

Student Absences

If your child is going to be away either because of illness or an appointment you must contact the school office in order to let us know. We are having a high number of parents not contacting the school, making it difficult for us to complete our Safe School Arrival responsibilities. As you are aware if we cannot get a hold of a parent or emergency contact, we must contact the Police to let them know we have an unaccounted for student.  Your help is appreciated. Let's ensure all students are safe.

Extended Absences
If you are planning a family trip, please contact the office so that we can send home a form for you to fill out informing us of the length of the absence.

Throughout the year colour teams will meet to challenge other teams in various activities, to build friendships across grades and divisions, to compete in some healthy competitions, to encourage leadership for our older students, to increase school spirit but most importantly to develop  a healthy school culture.

Please ask your child when they come home on Tuesday what colour team they are on and please have him or her dress in the colour on Wednesday, November 9th.  Teams will get one point for each student who dresses in the colour.  GO LIGHTNING GO!

School Council Reminder

Just a reminder that on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 pm in the library our second School Council Meeting will take place. This will be your last opportunity to put your name forward for consideration as a council member. All are welcome.

Purple Day and Homework Club

Thursday, October 20 is known in North America as Spirit Day. It is a day that people in business, government organizations, and schools wear purple to show their solidarity as they stand up against bullying. The colour purple was chosen from the rainbow as a colour that represents spirit. Show your Johnny Lombardi spirit on Spirit Day by wearing purple to show you believe that all students have a right to a safe and inclusive learning environment in any school that they go to and anywhere in the community!

Homework Club starts Wednesday,October 19!
We are happy to announce that we will be providing for students in grades 5 to 8 an after school Homework Club.  From 2:35- 3:05pm each day, students who have homework can come to the school library where staff will be available to support students with their homework. This is on a voluntary basis, unless teachers recommend that students should attend. In these incidents teachers will be contacting parents directly. Students come as they need the service; they do not have to come every day.

The expectation is that students must be working on homework. If they do not have homework they will be sent home. Students will not be coming to these sessions to be with their friends or for us to provide after school care. At 3:05pm students will be dismissed as they would have at 2:30pm.  Students must make their own arrangements to get home.  If parents are picking up their children, please wait at the front doors, where students will come out. It is the parent’s responsibility to know where their child is after 2:30pm dismissal. We will not be keeping track and informing parents if their child does or does not come to Homework Club unless the recommendation and agreement to attend Homework Club has been made between teacher and parent.

If you have additional questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
